Little Stoke Garden Society Spring 2010 Newsletter

I would like to offer a warm welcome from the Committee to all new members of the Society.

It seems to have been such a long winter, but now the clocks have gone forward we are blessed with more light to garden with.  The severe weather has at least broken down the soil ready for turning over and planting so here we go for another year!  We have more members of the Gardening Society and would like it to grow (excuse the pun).  Many have years of knowledge so if you would like to know the difference between your vine weevil and lily beetle feel free to ask, any question that cannot be answered we can always find out, so please email us on www.littlestokegardensociety.co.uk or drop into the shop at the Allotment Site behind Bush Avenue on Sundays from 10.00 to 12.00. You may also want to purchase one or two items whilst you are there, we now have a wonderful selection of home made jams, pickles and greeting cards besides all the usual garden sundries. We would like to expand our selection of speakers for our talks during the Winter and are looking for more gardening related talks.  If there is a specific topic you want or you know of anyone that is good please let us know.

As last years Open Day was such a success we have decided to hold it again on Sunday 30 May from 10.00-12.00.  There will be several stalls, tea/coffee/juice, cakes, plants for sale, plant swop, seed swop, tombola, identify the weed, old/surplus tool sale, scarecrow competition etc.  What we will need are donations for all – do you really need 3 packets of sprouts, or 6 dibbers............. all funds raised will be given to Charity. We look forward to seeing you and your friends/family on the day! (Flyer on reverse of this newsletter).

For those who are interested in visiting Gardens, shows etc, as I am being given information I am putting these in the shop, so when you visit take a look.

Joe  Hicks recommended the Highnam Court Spring Fair in Gloucester address: Highnam Court, Highnam, Gloucester, GL2 8DP (two miles west of central Gloucester), on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 April from 10.30-5.00.

I really enjoy the RHS Malvern Spring Show (6-9 May at the Three Counties Show) its a good day out with show gardens, plants, stalls.

If you visit any gardens this year please let us have feedback that we can let other members know.

I have been investigating gardening for the disabled and have found a very good website called ‘Thrive’. They are launching a new initiative offering free boxes of ready to grow vegetables, herbs or flowers to disabled people who would like to discover the benefits of gardening at home.  If you are aware of anyone that fits this category they can apply on www.thrive.org.uk or tel: 0118 9885688. Closing date 1 October 2010.

Start growing all those flowers, fruit and vegetables - I am sure that one of us should be able to give Joe Hicks a good run in the Autumn Show!   This year it will be on 4 September 2010 and information will be available at our May Open Day although application forms and full competition details will not be available until July.

Have a good season and don’t forget to pop into the Shop on Sundays from 10.00-12.00, we look forward to seeing you!
